Frequently Asked Questions

If you are entering therapy for the first time you may be wondering what to expect.  Check out these FAQs for more info or feel free to get in touch for wider queries.

What will my first therapy session be like?

If you have never been to therapy before, please be assured that I endeavour to make every new client feel welcome and comfortable.  You will not be pressured into sharing anything you don’t feel ready to, rather our first appointment is an opportunity to get to know each other.  I tailor my approach to your needs, so this will involve a gentle discussion to identify what brings you to therapy and what you hope to gain from process.  If you have previous experience of therapy we may discuss what has been helpful or unhelpful in the past so that we can factor this in to how we work together.  For those with no previous experience of therapy this first session is also an opportunity to explore any fears or worries you may have as we start the process.

What is the difference between talking with a therapist and talking with a friend?

Sometimes talking with a friend can be helpful and therapists will often encourage clients to build a strong support network in family and friends.  However there can be some disadvantages in relying solely on family and friends for support.  Sometimes family or friends may feel a conflict of loyalty and find it hard to keep the things you share with them confidential.  They may have their own struggles to deal with, become upset by the things you tell them or may be frustrated if you are unable to accept their advice.  In some cases difficult situations with family and friends are part of what brings us to therapy and it simply wouldn't be appropriate to turn to them for support.  Speaking with a therapist therefore offers a safe, confidential space where you can speak freely about the things that matter to you.  Therapist's are trained to listen objectively to their clients without judgement, to hold conversations in confidence and have formal supports in place to ensure their own wellbeing in the process.

How long will I be in therapy?

This very much depends on your individual situation.  I regularly review progress with clients throughout our work together and can offer short-term therapy or ongoing work that can last for several years.
